Point of Need
- The lack of local pediatric health care is a barrier to many children in Southeastern Madison County
- There are no pediatricians in the New Hope, Owens Cross Roads, Big Cove or Hampton Cove area
- Parents are struggling because of the lack of available office hours at the local walk-in clinic
- 35% of the families in these areas have a yearly income of less than $24,999
- 41% of children under the age of 5 in single mother families are below the poverty level
- 47% of the children in the county schools receive Free/Reduced Breakfast-Lunch assistance
- Studies have shown that good health is a critical cornerstone to academic and social success and is a precursor to learning
- School attendance rates have dropped significantly since HEALS closed their New Hope location
